“Melencholia” is the title of this program, borrowing the title from Helmut Oehring’s “Melencolia 1”, which in turn refers to a world-famous woodcut by Albrecht Dürer and refers to a human state of mind that all too often plays a role in the creation of art and also music. At times, melancholy, which reflects an ultimately crisis-ridden relationship of the individual to the world, became a topos dominating at least parts of art: think of the vanitas symbolism in the painting and literature of the early Baroque or the world-weariness that speaks from many musical works of the 19th century from Schubert to Mahler. Even contemporary music is no stranger to melancholy. In the image of the pouring rain, from which Peter Ablinger started in his “Regenstück”, one may see its echo as well as in the fragile sounds that wander back and forth between oboe and violin in Recbecca Saunders’ “to and fro”. Let us be surprised whether Reinhold Schinwald’s New Work was also born of melancholy.
