œnm . œsterreichisches ensemble fuer neue musik“Tuba mirum spargens sonum” is the beginning of the third stanza of the hymn “Dies irae dies illa” about the Last Judgment, the sequence for the dead in the Requiem:
Tuba mirum spargens sonum
Per sepulcra regionum
Coget omnes ante thronum.
If one searches for translations of this stanza, one finds the most different variants already for the first line. While the first part still speaks relatively uniformly of the “divine trombone,” one finds translations for “spargens sonum” such as “with wondrous sound” or “with shrill sound.” The adjectives range further to “amazing” or “strange.”
The trombonists of the œnm have set out to do justice to all these sounds – and beyond. A partly more, partly less spiritual program that brings both meditative spiritual and highly virtuosic facets of the trombone literature to the fore.
